Having chosen the Biblical Stations of the Cross, I am seeking to interpret them in a way that enables people to think more deeply. At first etched glass seemed to be the ideal medium for a multi-ethnic congregation because blue, red, purple or even green antique glass could be etched to depict faces and human forms, giving freedom from racial stereotypes. I often chose blue-on-clear for the face of Christ, etched to give a tonal range of blues evoking a mood of sadness, suffering & fear.
This year I have been experimenting with oil paintings of the Stations... I find that trying to portray suffering and linking it with the present day is quite draining, but finding links with the Gospel accounts of meetings with the Risen Christ makes a series like this much more positive and hopeful.
- I am currently searching for a "face of Christ" which is more compassionate - many traditional images are far too stern! Please email me if you can help my search...
- "Where do we see the Risen Christ today?" is a question I try to ask as I am painting...
